Canon 17-40mm f4 on eos rp
There Doesn’t seem to be a lot of options for wide angle zooms lens for canon cameras, especially if you’ve chosen to go with the r series of cameras. You mostly see offerings of 15-35mm or 16-35mm. These lenses in my opinion are a bit pricey when you consider that the wider end focal ranges are not heavily used in most genre of photography. As I continued to search online for a complementary wide angle zoom, I was finally able to narrow my choices down to two options. The Tamron 15-30mm or the canon 17-40mm.
My initial thought was to go with the Tamron offering, however it had an issue that I consider to be a flaw. The issue was the bulbous front element which killed the visual aesthetic and limited the use of filters.
I finally made my choice of the canon 17-40mm. The 17-40mm f4L is a nice affordable ef mount lens that can be adapted on to canons R series of cameras. It was appealing to me do to its focal range extending out to 40mm which i felt would give it more actual “play time” on my camera body. This lens in theory could be the prefect daily walk around lens and a nice wide angle when needed. But with out further ado I must disclose to you that the distortion on the wide end of this lens is so cringe worthy that i essential shed a tear when ever i view images from it. Of course you can correct the images in photoshop but the correction at times relies on a considerable crop which makes you feel that you could have just used a 20-24mm length. I’ll more then likely keep this lens for a while just in case I need the width but ill likely get a 16mm prime for my professional work.
